An exciting prospect is in store
for senior players in 2010.
Petanque New Zealand has accepted
an invitation to send a team of seniors (over
60) to a tournament in Abergavenny (Wales).
It is envisaged that the format
will be a 5 way competition between New Zealand,
Wales, England, Ireland and Scotland. At this
stage England has declined an invitation to
participate but it is hoped we can change their
mind before next year. It is not known why they
have declined at this stage.
This event is an idea put forward
by Trevor Neilson, Graeme Morris and Murray
Porter. Trevor had the contact in Abergavenny
and they are very keen to take up the challenge
of organising the event. They have sent
invitations to all the above countries.
The team is likely to be between
6 and 12 selected players (mixed male and
female). The final number is yet to be
negotiated between the participating countries.
To qualify players will need to be 60+ as at 31
July 2010
Even though the “official” team will be
selected, we are looking at trying to arrange
'unofficial' games for supporters who accompany
the team.
The intention is for the selected
players and the supporters to make their own way
to a starting point (probably London) meeting up
on a specified day. The tour will begin at that
point.
The idea here is for people to be
able to arrange their own air travel to London
and back e.g. by using airpoints or
airlines/routes of choice.
The timing of the tournament is
yet to be finalized but it is expected to be
somewhere in the July to September 2010 period.
The finer details will be worked
through in the next month or two. It is hoped to
be able to offer a petanque experiences in
France and perhaps Holland after the UK part of
the trip.
